When the news of Priyanka Jha's death broke, it sent shockwaves through her hometown of Noida and beyond. The young woman was the wife of cricketer MS Dhoni, who was then a budding player in the Indian cricket team.
Priyanka Jha was a student of the Amity International Business School in Noida. She had completed her Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) from there and was pursuing her post-graduation degree in the same discipline.
Piyoosh Jha, Priyanka’s father, told The Indian Express: “She was studying BBA at AMITY University, Gurgaon. But she wanted to pursue engineering abroad and came back home on Sunday (September 1). We will go back to our native place Dehri-on-Sone after cremating her… She wanted to study MSW or M Phil in social work from an American university but we were against it."
The news of her accident spread like wildfire in the city. Students of the Amity International Business School, where Priyanka was a student, were deeply affected by her death. Her friends are still shocked and have found it difficult to believe that she is no more with them.
Priyanka Jha Ms Dhoni had reached Dehradun when she heard the news of the accident and rushed to Gangtok. She was accompanied by her mother Saroj Shrivastava, who lives in Delhi, and her brother Shubham Jha Ms Dhoni.
Sakshi Dhoni flew back with Priyanka's body to Noida where the last rites took place on July 19, 2002. Her mother remembers her as a caring and compassionate person who always thought about others before thinking about herself.
The accident took place on July 19, 2002. Priyanka had been out with friends in Dehradun and was returning from a party when her car rammed into another vehicle. The car belonged to Sakshi Dhoni's brother-in-law who was driving it at the time of the accident. The impact caused severe head injuries which resulted in Priyanka's death hours later.
Sakshi Dhoni was in Dehradun when she heard about her daughter's accident and immediately flew back to Noida where the last rites took place on July 19, 2002.
She was a good daughter and sister, a good friend and student, an athlete, dancer and singer. She also enjoyed writing poetry.
A loving daughter who always thought about others before thinking about herself. She would ask me if I needed anything when she came home from work or school. She would go out of her way to make sure everyone who came into our lives was cared for.
