Cricket Australia (CA) has confirmed the death of former Australian batsman Dean Jones at 59, after a suspected heart attack. The 59-year-old died on Thursday in Mumbai where he was due to appear at an event for sponsors AIG. His wife Jane Jones said she would be donating his organs via Gift of Life program and thanked fans for their support following his sudden passing.
Dean Jones, former Australian cricketer, died of cardiac arrest in Mumbai on Thursday. He was 59 years old and was in India at the time of his death.
Jones had been ill for some time and was admitted to Seven Hills Hospital in the suburb Bandra after he complained of breathing difficulties.
"Jones was brought to hospital this morning suffering from a heart attack and passed away shortly after," said a spokesman for the hospital. "He was here for treatment related to his heart condition."
The former Australian cricketer joined the commentary team of broadcaster ESPN Star Sports during its launch of coverage in 1993 and continued through until 2008 when cricket returned to free-to-air television following years of being pay television only. During that time he also hosted "Cricket Extra" on ABC Radio Grandstand with fellow commentator Jim Maxwell. He was also one half of Channel 10's commentary team during their coverage of Australia's home series against Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka as well as hosting several shows on Fox Sports including Cricket Australia Confidential which ran from 2009 until 2014. Jones has co-authored several books about cricket with former players Allan Border, Ian Chappell and Richie Benaud among others but had more recently been working for Network Ten as part of their host team for Big Bash League matches involving the Melbourne Stars
Cricketers are taking to social media to pay tribute to former Australian batsman, Dean Jones.
Tributes have been pouring in for the former Aussie batsman who was a part of two Ashes-winning teams, with England's current captain Joe Root among those who have paid their respects since news broke that Mr Jones died aged 58 on Thursday morning after suffering a stroke at his home in Melbourne.
Mr Root said on Twitter: "Absolutely devastated by this news."
Dean Jones’s wife Jane Jones has revealed the reason behind his death on social media. Cricket Australia also confirmed the reports of the death of the former player. The 48-year-old cricketer passed away at his home in Adelaide, Australia on Monday after suffering from a heart attack a day earlier.
In her post, Jane wrote: “Yesterday was one of those days that changed our lives forever but I want to let everyone know that Dean is going to donate his organs through Gift of Life program! He said he wanted to give someone else a chance at life and he could never have imagined how many lives he would save with this decision! So if you see someone out there who looks like my husband please send them my love."
Jane shared a heartfelt message on Twitter regarding her husband’s demise and wrote, “It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing away of Dean Mervyn Jones AM. Deano died of a sudden cardiac arrest. We are all shocked and saddened, but focusing on celebrating his life, remarkable career and the love of family. He has touched many lives in this world over his 93 years and there are so many who will miss him terribly."

She added, “We ask everyone to respect our privacy as we grieve during this very difficult time. We thank you for your support and prayers and would appreciate it if you keep him in yours as well over the coming days as we celebrate a great man, life and career”."
According to the report by WKYC Channel 3 News, Jones had been experiencing chest pains since Monday night and was rushed to University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center where he later died.
